TL;DR Surfing is the best water sport because it is the most fun, exhilarating and rewarding one.

Surfing provides more of a sense of achievement than other water sports as it takes longer to learn and perfect. The likes of paddle boarding and kayaking can be learnt very fast, whereas surfing takes many hours practise to become accustomed to the techniques and methods involved. Therefore, when you master surfing it feels like so much more of an accomplishment as it has taken a lot longer to learn the skills required.

Additionally, surfing provides more of an adrenaline rush and is more exhilarating than other water sports. You have to learn about the waves and how you react to them. Then when you catch and ride a wave it is an exhilarating feeling and is so fun. You learn so much about the seas and tides, it is a great educational experience.

Surfing also entails you to spend a lot of time swimming in the sea. It is so action packed, you have to keep focused on the waves and what is coming towards you. It takes focus of all your concentration which is great for mental health. With the right wetsuit, surfing can be an activity for all year round.

Surfing is not the best water sport because it takes too long to master. In order to 'be good' at surfing and truly enjoy your time on the water, you have to spend countless hours practicing. For someone who does not live near an ocean, this is not probable. I believe that kayaking or paddle boarding is the best water sport because everyone in the family can do it and you don't have to be a particular skill level to have fun.

For me, water skiing is the best water sport, and cliff diving (if that counts).

As a bit of an adrenaline junkie, I find that surfing doesn't quit hit the spot for me. Yes it may be exciting when you finally conquer your first wave, however it doesn't have the excitement and adventure that I get when I am water skiing of cliff jumping.

The thrill of being attached to the end of a speedboat by a rope and gliding over the water. And the unbelievable rush from jumping from a great height into water below. Whilst I do enjoy surfing every now and then, it just does not feed my adrenaline and need for speed and adventure.

TL;DR - For me, scuba diving is the best water sport, because the feeling of diving in the water makes you experience the best sense of freedom by exploring something different and feeling the awe of being underwater.

Scuba diving is the way to go if you like to have the sense of total immersion into a unique experience. Under the water you feel free, as 'diving is the closest thing to flying' (see 'Blue season Bali'). This experience of flying is enhanced when you share it with your friends and family who can come scuba diving with you.

By being under the water we see something different from when we are above. We can explore unique waterscapes full of diversity and color. Scuba diving allows us to see 'marine life and biodiversity' that includes wonderful 'coral reefs, flashy invertebrates, curious marine mammals and an unbelievable array of colorful fish' (see 'AquaWorld').

If you are an adventurous person who wants to see and feel something unique, scuba diving offers the ultimate water immersion into a world completely different to our own. Under the water you feel exhilaration and you lose track of time as you come in contact with the fascinating world of sea life. It makes you feel closer to nature and at one with the waters you explore.

TL;DR – Surfing is pretty great – maybe not the best, but certainly beneficial for you as a person and adventurer!

Surfacing forces you to be practical. Thinking fast to find the safest course while you're riding a wave is certainly important, but just choosing a wave that is worth going for after you've spent time and energy getting out far enough takes a certain mindset. Not to mention finding your way back to the sand.

Spending so much time waiting for a wave in the water puts you in a potentially terrifying place and it's freeing to confront the unknown. You don't know what might be lurking below you or if you're on the wave that will throw you into a wipeout. It builds your courage and determination!

Health wise, if you're surfing on a sunny day, you're getting more than an adequate dose of vitamin D. Balancing on a board is a skill in itself that is physically taxing for the average person. For your mental health, recognizing how beautiful the edge of the coast is while you're out in the ocean can bring so much clarity and calmness into your life.
